Abstract
Motion sickness and its coping mechanisms were studied on the purposively
selected twenty (20) first year women student in the College of Education,
Tagoloan Community College as the participants. It utilizes the
Phenomenological, ethnographical and anecdotal recording with the aid on
the Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to explore the lived experiences on the
motion sickness and its coping mechanism. And, to shed light how and why
absenteeism happened in the classroom setting. As explore farther that
dizziness, vomiting, and nausea were common symptoms, they did not
always correlate with lower general weighted average. However, the ability
to concentrate, complete tasks, and retain information during lectures was
significantly affected. The study identified environmental factors, relaxation
techniques, and distraction methods as strategies for managing symptoms.
Addressing motion sickness can enhance students' academic performance
and contribute to a more inclusive educational environment.
Keywords: Motion Sickness
Introduction
The study has been done due to the observed classroom absenteeism. Preliminary
information from the selected twenty (20) first year women College of Education students in
Tagoloan Community College that motion sickness” was one of the common reason. This reason
condition happens to an individual in movement. The condition on changing of location and
position of an individual has been studied whether this would create motion sickness as alleged. It
has been studied to prove that the allege is true. And, how this motion sickness happened and why
was this happened and what was the main reason.
This research looks into absenteeism as an act done by the students without intent to do the
act. Absentee has been seen by this research that they are only victim on due circumstances. The
researcher designed variables as intervention such as:
menstrual and pregnancy; full and empty
stomach; riding in a mobile facility; ability to travel, enjoy certain activities, and do the work for

some reason. As motion sickness was seen from the parlance in the medical field as common
problem characterized by nausea, dizziness, and vomiting that occurs when the brain receives
conflicting signals from the eyes, inner ears, and other sensory receptors during motion, such as in
cars, boats, airplanes, and even in space, the twenty (20) first year College of Education student
participants in Tagoloan Community College undergone medical executive check-up.
Due to the curiosity of the researchers they would come-out this study when they gathered
in a certain “space and time” for academic purposes and air-out common understanding for their
reasons of coming late in the gathering place. The coming late, unstable emotion, irritable, easily
get angry without reasons, and many other for personal reasons are also associated with
psychological concern.
While it is true, that the sharing becoming more phenomenological to the members. And
so, they came out to study “motion sickness experience.” Thus, the phenomenological,
ethnographic and anecdotal information recording was decided by the team of research to utilize
as a gate guard of the researcher for the twenty (20) first year College of Education students in
Tagoloan Community College purposively selected participants. While the sharing was
continuously done by the member team of the researcher they commonly understood that the study
of Smith et al., (2024) on Motion sickness serve as one of the guiding light of the study that said,
people are reported extremely sensitive when they rode in automobiles, quickly stand, changes
the mind-set of the “time and place, untoward and unexpected movement creates motion sickness.
As farther explored by the team of researcher they were able to enter the cosmic world of
health related issues on motion sickness that causes uncomfortable symptoms, such as nausea,
perspiration, and vomiting. And, supported by the study on teleology as to the purpose they served
rather than as its caused. It is also well-recognized motion sickness impairs several human
performances.
Based on the study of Sumayli et al., (2023), motion sickness is a serious problem that
affects travelers' comfort on all modes of transportation. Roll, pitch, and yaw rotations can be
produced by any kind of transportation. Roll oscillation exposure in land transportation can happen
in tilting trains, buses, jitney and other small vehicles during cornering. Motion sickness has
frequently been linked to roll oscillation, either alone or in conjunction with translational or
rotational oscillation. As mentioned by Dam & Jeon (2024), the next big thing in the transportation
sector is automated vehicles (AVs) getting there will not be easily given the obstacles on the way.
The stop and go with a heavy traffic may also cause mind blowing and changing (Gomez et al.,
2023).
Motion sickness is oftenly disregarded. As more individual or even drivers engage in
"passenger tasks" as passengers, motion sickness will become more common, and AVs won't be
able to fully serve society. As indicated by Spence (2024) traveling generally resulted in higher
levels of tension and anxiety, particularly while flying, and it also regularly compromises
passengers' personal space into astrophobia or cosmophobia. In the context of passenger
transportation, fragrance serves four main functional tasks. These comprise the disguising of
offensive odors, the introduction of branded characteristic scents, transient olfactory marketing
interventions, and the practical application of scent to improve the travel experience. In the latter
scenario, one can think of using fragrance to create a cleaner impression or to make people on
airplanes feel less stressed and anxious. Scents, on the other hand, have been proposed as a non-
offensive way to warn or calm down may even aid with motion sickness. And, this is a nice

mechanism however, studies revealed also that scented odor becomes also unlikely, unpleasant
and unfavorable to health.
According to Chang et al., (2024) they said, “the virtual reality (VR) business is gaining
popularity, and efforts to apply VR technology to other industries including gaming, film, and
education are also intensifying. However, some users may have uncomfortable symptoms during
virtual reality sessions that resemble motion sickness. This effect was called a "cyber sickness," or
"VR sickness" The main signs of VR sickness are nausea, confusion, and eye fatigue (Gomez et
al., 2025d). VR sickness is seen as a pressing issue that has to be resolved since these uneasy
sensations may prevent further VR experiences. And this would probably be a reflection to the
commuters to any vehicles.
Before the researcher’s exploration, on to the motion sickness experience of the
purposively selected College of Education first year women students at Tagoloan Community, the
researchers wanted to know the strategies on how they cope with it which are made essential in
improving well-being and enhancing quality of life. As the researcher participant is also one of the
victim of this “motion sickness” we may find ways to reduce the symptoms and enhance overall
experiences in coping up this lived experiences.
Understanding on how people cope with motion sickness the study will provide valuable
information and insights into the psychological and physiological processes involved. May this
study and its findings serves as a working knowledge to improve comfort, enjoyment, and
engagement in activities affected by motion sickness, allowing individuals to fully participate
and fully enjoy their surroundings and living quality of life to the fullest.
Methods
This study employed a phenomenological (people experiences, events and interaction are
being recorded for at least twenty-one (21) months), ethnographically (identifying their unique
diverse cultural way of living, their behavioral outlook of life) and anecdotally (writing by jotting
down the behavioral and non-behavioral happening in the locales) recording on to the research
design in exploring the lived experiences of the College of Education first year women students at
Tagoloan Community College in the Municipality of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, Northern
Mindanao, Philippines who are purposively selected on the study “motion sickness.”
All necessary requirements and protocol for research were followed and observed. Thus,
employing the ten-steps (10) method in analyzing the transcribed data, included the following: 1)
reading and re-reading the transcripts recorded during the field work to familiarize the word or
words nuances; 2) coding and decoding names (hide) of the participants and its significant
statement (according to their human, physical, rural and urban geographic landscape); 3) extracting
the significant statements from the unrefined data (according to importance); 4) understanding the
significant statement according to their cultural peculiarity; 5) formulate the main-themes; 6)
draw-out the sub-themes from the main-themes; 7) then, go back to the source and origin of the
information for validation and allowing the participants to confirm by getting the reliability; 8)
saturate the information or data collected within three (3) confirmatory scene of acceptance for
authenticity and novelty of the information and, 9) come-up a compiling exhaustive description of
everything generated in steps 1-8 to draw-out the morale of the information.
And finally, 10) summarizing the exhaustive description so that there is an identification
of the fundamental structure of the phenomenon, and the credibility of the data are ensured through
discussions (Gomez et al., 2025b; 2025c). Then, go back to the area and revisit to what has been

written and allows the participants to listen and read their statement and confirm the veracity of
the information.
To that end, the saturation process of the collected and gathered data from the field of study
are handled with greatest care from the hands of the researcher(s) to preserved the authenticity,
veracity and novelty of the information from the end of the participants. Let it be known always
that the participants are human being where their memory and experiences are always subject to
the condition of the circumstances of “time and space.” The 5 Ws and 1 H on the ABC of research
are always condition “sine qua non” on the “lived experiences” (Gomez, 2025a).
Results and Discussions
The Education Students experience as a challenge to their academic performance in terms
of the following: Dizziness, Nausea, Vomiting, dizziness and Pallor. The ten (10) first year female
social studies student were chosen to be the participants on the study. As they were observed within
four (4) semesters from the school year 2021 to 2023 and two-year saturation period were done
and the following main themes were phenomenologically, ethnologically and anecdotally recorded
are as follows: menstrual and pregnancy; having full and empty stomach; riding in a mobile
facility; ability to travel comfortably and the enjoyment of a certain activities and do the work.
Menstrual and pregnancy. This is an experiences usually encountered by the women who
are at pregnancy and menstrual period. Five (5) of the ten (10) participants who were on their
family way. And, the ten (10) participants are in their early adulthood. While it is true that only
5% on their early adulthood who have experienced dizziness while they were in their schooling
hours (Picciotti et al., 2023). And, they were in common during their extracurricular and co-
curricular activities that women suffered dizziness due to their monthly menstrual period. And,
these occurrences happened in the participants.
Thus, according to the participants and to wit:
basta lang ko malipung nga unta wala man koy sakit kay aduna
man koy binuwan nga “check-up” sa center.
Dili man pud ko buros hinunua gidugo
[…very quick I feel dizzy that I don’t have illness or sickness because
I have my monthly check-up at the center. But, when my monthly
menstruation is approaching one week before it happened there I have a
feeling of being dizzy simultaneously and when I walk up going to the school
my body feel cold and the surrounding will keep on moving which is why I
got to absent my class rather than when I force to go might I will be disgrace
on my way. And, even if I will ride in the jitney or bus I still vomiting without
substance to come-out and I am not pregnant. And, usually when I go to
school I eat menthol candy to manage my being motion sickness and very

menstruation period]
The phenomenological lived experiences by the twenty (20) participants first year women
College of Education students in Tagoloan Community College during their menstrual period
within four (4) semesters school year 2021-2023 are opening window to the Dean of Student
Affairs and services report regarding the absenteeism of the students. It can be also gleaned in the
record the consistency of the said information which the administration and management may be
able to design a policy for the purpose. Thus, they said and to wit:
I always bring with me some “haplas” (an ointment for massage) and a lot
of candy para (for) making a while by my “biyahi” (travel). And also, I
bring handkerchief with an aromatic menthol flavor most of the time in case
I end up in vomiting.
And, they also added to say,
“I employ strategies like sitting near the windows & taking deep
breaths to calm myself. I use also techniques like looking at a fixed point,
sitting near windows, and taking some medications by imagining and
thinking good memories. And, besides I always sit near the open windows
and eat candy while traveling and pinch and grief my hand firmly.
Getting some air (fan or outdoors) might lessen motion sickness by opening a window or
by going outside (Marcin, 2023). Turn the air vents in your direction or think about utilizing a fan
to blast air into your face if the weather or your mode of transportation prevents you from doing
so. Scented vehicle surrounding may lessens dizziness and vomiting scenes.
Full and empty stomach. During the phenomenological, ethnographic and anecdotal
recording, the participant researcher observed that the distance to travel from home to their
destination it took an average of an hour. When the participants are hungry and thirsty they need
to vomit and dizziness will be experienced. Sometime an empty stomach bothers the mental
activity.
Thus, according to them:
mo lakaw man gud mi nga walay kaun ug mag dalidali. Usahay
gusto mi mo kaun apan wala may among kwarta busa antusun na lamang
ang ka gutum. Ug usahay usab gustu mi mo inum sa tubig apan mo palit man
mi busa antusun na lamang usab ang ka uhaw. Busa kung mahimo bisan
tubig nalamang naa kami mainum.
[we walk and go without eating our meals because we’re on a hurry.
Sometimes we want to eat food but we don’t have money which is why we
sacrifice being hungry. Sometimes we want to drink water but we need to buy
which is why we sacrifice being on thirsty. Which is why if necessary even
water we’ve something to drink]
This is the challenge of the community and even to the relative counterpart partners in
terms of their social obligations that at least even water to drink must be available to everybody
when they are on thirsty. Although, this can be made available as one buys in the store. So, the

greatest challenge is in the part of the local government that they can provide the basic need such
that on water for the public.
Although air, water and other natural resources that life has it all would be a great challenge
in the progressive highly urbanized community due to its competitiveness. But at least the least of
our brethren are being serve for water and healthful ecosystem to lessens the incidence of brain
dysfunction.
Riding in a mobile facility. Riding a vehicle in a long or short distance really caused dizzy.
This theme came out due to the empty stomach and being on thirsty. Sometimes this can be
happened even if one is not on hungry but dehydrated due to the lack of water one experienced
dizziness or it can be vis-a-vis. Sometimes we pass the blames the things that cause us to happens
but only to find out that there must be deeper reasons that cause us the way we are. In the incidence
that happens below is a typical example of looking back why and how it happened.
It is understood that:
bisan busug kami o bisan dili man kami gi uhaw basta mo sakay
na gani mi sa sakyanan murag malipong mi bisan naka lingkud. Ga labad
amung ulo ug kasukahun dayun mi ug walay e suka. Murag mo tuyuk and
palibut ug among nasinati nga bisan hinay ra mo dagan ang sakyanan apan
murag kusug nakaayu.
[even we’ve full stomach and not in thirsty as we ride in a vehicle
we’ve feel and experienced dizziness even if we’ve set down. We’ve head ache
and we’ve to vomit without something that came-out. I feel the surrounding
is keep on moving even if the vehicle will run very slow I feel that the vehicle
run very fast]
In the experience made by the twenty (20) first year women College of education students
participants is really an unusual experience because when going together to the (RHU) Regional
Health Unit and even to the clinic of the institution the findings of this twenty (20) participants
they are really normal and don’t have any identified illness nor medical history regarding of their
complaints in terms of dizziness and vomiting. Probably, findings in different review of related
literature regarding this experience and incidences supports that the visual and cognitive
distraction” is an issue while riding a vehicle is in trouble or problem with the geolocation.
The response on the visual activity of “recognition” connects to the brains and when loaded
for somethings that is on recurrence memory would become a cognitive load. And, as the social
studies research go beyond the research per se they found out that, there are cognitive load that the
twenty (20) participants are bringing always in their day to day undertakings. And these are happy
and sad memories. When triggered by due circumstances it will associate the present to the past
“event” then it will influence the decision making for the action be decided. And, the following
are: 1) shared family problems; 2) financial; 3) things to be done are not yet done. And, these are
the backload or baggaged that the research has seen to the twenty (20) participants despite when
personally ask common to them is the number of the family members and the relationship they
have with their parents and children. Meaning, it’s not really the immediate but primary cause of
the effect. Then, we pass the blames to the riding on a mobile facility.

Ability to travel comfortably. This theme happened during the mobility from home to
school. To corroborate the previous observation once an individual is bringing the cognitive load
everywhere the phase value of “time and space” would become different. Especially when such
act is associated to the sad and happy hormones that would dictate to the present action to be done.
The twenty (20) participants first year women College of Education students revealed that no
instance that their mind is fixed and at ease. They are always bothered when things caught in their
attention because they wanted to be solve at rightly and sometimes lead to anxiety. And, said:
…ga labad dayun akong ulo… bisan gani mo lakaw lang ako mo
aksiyon na dayun nga mutuyok ang akong palibut. Ug mo samut kini kung
naa lagi ko sa school labi na gyud sa “room.”
[I feel headache even if I only walk there the surrounding will be
keeps on moving and this will be worsening when I am in the school
especially when I am inside the room]
As stated by the participants these are associated with personal illnesses that boils down on
the lack of water, high or low blood pressure, nervous disorder and relative health issues. And,
they are vulnerable to hypertension. However, when look into during the occurrence on the
dizziness and vomiting the lack of water and not being open to others are found cognate in the
participants. Thus, these developed anxiety and cognitive load in the part of the participants. So,
drink more water and have time for conversation, greener and fiber foods and lifestyle check are
advised. If symptoms persist see your doctor.
Enjoy certain activities and do the work. The activities that the participants are repairing
here are activities that involved in their daily household choirs which include activities done in the
school. These are activities that really involved cognate. Meaning, an activity that need the act of
the mind. Sometimes it need deeper processing of the mind because it involved financial
calisthenics and dynamics. The moment when the participants are already in the school observation
revealed that they’ve carried the problem at home to school. And, found out that the twenty (20)
participants first year women College of Education students are financially bothered despite of
being “ESKOLAR NG BAYAN” (Scholar of the Government). Thus, when scaffolded by their
classmates and they are always welcome as a team the researcher found out that they really need
someone to lane and confide on as a family. Therefore, these are seeker on security.
Financially and emotionally battered. This refers to the expenses involved during the
everyday undertakings which affect the individual feeling. Thus, listening the dialogue during the
conversation of the participants they commonly said to wit:
“adunay panahon nga ang akong huna-huna ug pagbati naa gyud sa
tagun o way sasaw. Busa, murag wala gyud koy gibati. Apan kung mo hisgut
na gani sa mga hilisgutanan nga dunay kalambigitan ang kwarta murag
mulabad ang akung ulo ug ka sukaun usab dayon ako. Kini akung na
ubsirbahan taud-taud na.
[there was a time that when I am in my mental serenity I fell
complacent and ease. Which is why feeling that there was no feeling on
dizziness and relative untoward incidences. But, if times came that there were
issues and topics on something money and financial that is the time that my

feeling will become unstable and he act of vomiting without something that
comes-out from the mouth. And, I observed this one for quiet long.
In the themes, this was reiterated always during the conversation made with the
participants. Although, this concern was often time abused but it is true. As money were used being
the medium of our needs, goods, services and happiness, we sometimes mislead our financial
management plan into the philosophy of a ditch digger. Thus, it said, “I dig the ditch in order to
earn money to buy the food to give me strength to dig the ditch.” This is a vicious circle that
stereotype one’s action while covered-up by emotion.
While it is true to live in this world one will provide himself food, clothing, shelter and
education. And, when started something one will end-up something. If when one started nothing
it will end-up nothing. Our being craftiness, creativeness and thriftiness will help us financially
stable and secured. Listening to the participants’ common statement that said, “pag walay kwarta
daghan akong bation (if there is no money I feel sickly). This boils down to the emotional
shipwreck.
Motion sickness affects academic performances. Participants clearly stated that motion
sickness affects their academic performance negatively and in a very challenging manner as the
participants clearly stated that they struggle to concentrate during classes because of not feeling
well. Thus, listening to the participants frustration of going to school wherein, according to them
they said:
… it really affects my focus that I can't listen to my classes anymore. And,
have always an obstruction to my stomach and mind. To which, it yielded me
to come-up a 1.7 in my general weighted average of 88%. Much more, when
there are activities to be done in translations to the outcomes-based teaching
learning plan, I was really bothered a lot where I am always behind to my
classes.
Reflecting to the statement above made by the participants it is really a struggle and a
challenged. The research made by Gresty & Golding (2024) indicating that these struggle and
challenges to time and space orientation influence verbal and non-verbal activities equally
creating “mind-set.” It creates also other mind interferences, creating mind processing on imaging
on the past and present experiences. When unresolved issues in the mind are still hang-up it would
become a cognitive load which the mind resist to understand. The building bloc of the mind is the
“recognition.” Failure to resolved that raw materials of knowledge it will always recur anytime
and everywhere. Therefore, the multitasking abilities are restrained by limited "central attention"
or "general capacity.” However, to those who regained the adjustment it will always become the
epistemology. Meaning, with this challenges it will become the highway to emotional
intelligences.
Coping mechanism. This is a strategy of the twenty (20) participants that is oftenly
mentioned during the conversation and dialogue made by the participant observer that, they get
their headset and listen the music.” And, “I am also happy when “braw-braw, ada and muka” (the
name of the school dogs) are in the vicinity. It changes my mindset, attention and focus. And, the
researcher ask question saying, how about when you are at home, would you do the same? The
answer is yes! because everybody we’ve our own pet dogs and cats. This is an implication that

music, dogs and cat’s domestication is a diversionary strategy to shift the mind-set into irregular
activity.
The statement made by the participants is really the establishment of the mindset and its
focus to change the blueprint that is already imbedded in the mind. While it is true that there is
medical intervention to be done by this experiences but the best for now is to personally do the
“yoga.” The breathing control and allowing the cosmic mind to organized concepts within the
anatomy of man and focus to a particular area of healing. Thus, the color of the space or
surrounding, the sounds, the aromatic flavor and unusual activities to be done must be planned and
programed.
EXHAUSTIVE DISCUSSSIONS
The twenty (20) first year women in the College of Education in Tagoloan Community
College as participants were phenomenologically, ethnographically and anecdotally studied
wherein the best practices of using music and the presence of pets, particularly dogs, to enhance
focus and mindset. These experiences alter ingrained mental patterns. Acknowledging the role of
medical intervention, it highlights the importance of personal practices like yoga and breathing
control to achieve mental organization and healing.
Conclusions
Motion sickness on students' and the allege absenteeism. While it is true that symptoms
like dizziness and nausea do not necessarily correlate with the lower general weighted average but
they impair concentration, task completion, and information retention during lectures.
Environmental factors and relaxation techniques are crucial for managing symptoms. Favorable
interventions such that on the non-pharmacologic therapies, mindfulness and exposure to triggers,
have shown promise in reducing symptoms and enhancing learning. Implementing tailored support
and awareness create a more supportive academic environment for affected students.
